Music for the Reception
When it comes to the music at your reception there are a few simple rules to follow. Now keep in mind that as a Bride and Groom the music that is to be played is entirely up to you but Omaha Brides.com does have some suggestions.
VARIETY VARIETY VARIETY
If you think about the overall age group of your Wedding Reception guests you will probably notice that the majority is over the age of 35 years old. Mixed in of course you will have all the other age groups and as we say your crowd will generally span ages eight to eighty. So it is imperative to consider the age groups that will be at your reception as you choose the music to be played.
It goes without saying that you should start the evening out with some classic oldies that will appeal to your older guests. Keep the music upbeat and danceable during the first hour of the dance music. More times than not it will be the young folks dancing to this music but at least you will not be scaring away the older guests. For instance, The Twist is a great song that the younger guests will enjoy dancing to. The older folks may or may not be dancing to this but at least it is a song they know and can relate to. Some song suggestions for the first hour of dance music include:
1. Rock Around The Clock
2. Shout
3. Jailhouse Rock
4. In the Mood
5. Great Balls of Fire
6. Respect
7. Runaround Sue
8. Cecelia
9. Brown Eyed Girl
10. The Twist
Once the first hour is over you can have your DJ start to blend in to more modern and danceable music that will appeal to your younger crowd. This is the music that will keep the majority of the guests that want to dance dancing. For instance, the music will start to blend into 80's, 90's, and Current. Songs including:
1. Footloose
2. Stayin? Alive
3. Love Shack
4. Brick House
5. YMCA
6. Grease Medley
7. Electric Slide
8. You Shook Me All Night Long
The above is the most basic formula for keeping guests dancing throughout the night. But you may have noticed that there were no slow songs listed. In between sets of fast music you will want you DJ to play slow music. Keep in mind that there will be guests at your reception who will never fast dance but will have no problem slow dancing. This is why it is important to add plenty of slow sets throughout the evening. The following is a list of slow sets to throw in throughout the night.
1. Can't Help Falling In Love
2. Unchained Melody
1. Wonderful Tonight
2. Angel Eyes
1. Unforgettable
2. At Last
1. I Cross My Heart
2. I Hope You Dance
1. Could I have This Dance
2. How Do I Live
1. I Could Not Ask For More
2. Hero
There are more sets but I think you get the idea. Keep the music flowing but be sure to add these slow sets to accommodate the guests that just will not fast dance.
The Advice of Omaha Brides.com is to always cater to your guests when it comes to the reception music. Happy guest will dance and have a good time and the music is often a major role.
